A mom wrote in and said last year, she made a donation to a local rabbit rescue group and sponsored two rabbits for Easter in her kids' names. She then used the bunnies' photos and character descriptions from the website and made a sign for each bunny. She put the signs in her kids' Easter baskets and gave them their donation gift for Easter. They loved it!

Now THAT'S the way to give kids an Easter bunny!

Think a bunny would make the perfect Easter gift? For live rabbits, the caring goes on after Easter. Ask yourself these eight questions to find out if you are rabbit-ready.

Fairfaix VA: Bella, a brown and white Dutch mix rabbit, spends her days hiding under furniture, sneaking into the kitchen, and being scratched between the ears by her owner Barbara Post. Nine years ago, however, she was alone and abandoned in a cage at a shelter with an uncertain future. Originally purchased by a family as an Easter bunny, they soon grew tired of caring for her and gave her up for adoption. At the time, Barbara was looking for a companion for her first rabbit, a purebred Mini Rex named Fox. The House Rabbit Society introduced Fox to a variety of rabbits to help find him the perfect fit.

"Fox was very aloof," Barbara said. "Girl rabbits would come up to him and he would not even pay attention. And then we put Bella in with him and they immediately started playing and running around. You could tell right away that they were going to be a good fit. So I adopted her." Thanks to the efforts of the House Rabbit Society, Bella now enjoys a carefree life with a loving family, but not all rabbits are so lucky.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals estimates that thousands of rabbits end up in shelters or are abandoned into the wild after Easter each year. Rabbits are often turned away at shelters or are euthanized. Some rabbit owners release their "Easter bunny" into the wild, where rabbits can quickly fall victim to predators, injury, or illness.

Anyone who is considering buying a live rabbit for Easter needs to ask the following questions:

1.	Are you ready for a roommate?
Rabbits are social animals that are best kept indoors. Outside, rabbits are susceptible to extreme temperatures, fleas and disease.
2.	Are you okay losing your cable television connection?
Some bunnies love to chew on rugs, furniture and electrical cords, which may need protection as if you were child-proofing your home.
3.	Do you mind cleaning up a few accidents?
Rabbits can be trained to use litter boxes, but they may have an occasional accident.
4.	Are you ready for a grooming session?
Bunnies groom themselves constantly, but they can benefit from being brushed regularly.
5.	Can you watch their diet?
Rabbits need a diet of good quality pellets, fresh hay, fruits and vegetables, and plenty of clean water. They cannot live on carrots alone. In fact, because of the high sugar content, carrots should only be a treat.
6.	Can you make a commitment?
The average spayed or neutered rabbit lives as long as a cat or dog. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the oldest rabbit in the world lived to the age of 18.
7.	Are you ready for two?
Rabbits are social creatures, and many do well with a companion.
8.	Are you okay with allergies?
Allergies to pet hair are common, as are allergies to hay, which rabbits should always have available to them for healthy digestion.

If you answered "Yes" to all of these questions, then a rabbit may be a good pet for you to consider, not for just for Easter, but as a long-term commitment. Contact the local chapter of the House Rabbit Society or another rescue organization to find your perfect match.

If, however, you answered "No" to any of the above questions, consider buying chocolate bunnies to fill Easter baskets this year. The Columbus House Rabbit Society started the Make Mine Chocolate! campaign in 2002 to educate potential rabbit owners about the real challenges of raising a pet rabbit. The campaign advocates gifting chocolate bunnies instead of real ones at Easter for those who are not ready for a long-term commitment.

"Adopting a rabbit on the cute factor is not responsible," said Barbara. "There is a lot to know about a rabbit, and it is a commitment."

In addition to being the owner of a rescued Easter bunny, Barbara owns the Historical Chocolate Company, which specializes in recreating landmarks and historic buildings in chocolate. This year, she is combining her love of rabbits with her chocolate business and will be offering chocolate Easter rabbits patterned from antique chocolate molds. The Historical Chocolate Company will be donating a portion of the proceeds to the Make Mine Chocolate! campaign and the House Rabbit Society's Maryland, D.C. and Northern Virginia chapter so that rabbits like Bella find a home.

After spending the 2009 in a "holding pattern" due to health issues, we are back and ready to tackle the 2010 MMC season with renewed energy!

To kick things off, we have some exciting things planned here in Columbus. Look for volunteers with bunny ears to be passing out flyers during upcoming Gallery Hops in the Short North.

We'll also have a contest to guess the number of jelly beans in a jar at Stauff's in Grandview. The winner will receive a chocolate bunny, of course!

We are also sponsoring a photo contest on Bunspace in the weeks leading up to Easter! Visit www.bunspace.com for more information as Easter approaches.

The new campaign season has brought some exciting new Partnerships. Check back in the coming weeks to find out who has joined our campaign and what fantastic events they are planning to spread the message that rabbits are not disposable pets!

With just a couple of days until Easter Sunday, Heather Dean was anxious to go on the air with Louie B. Free to talk once again about the Make Mine Chocolate! message. Louie asked how she was doing and Heather said "I'm exhausted with Easter right around the corner!" In the brief 10 minute segment, Heather focused on the importance of researching rabbit care before you bring one into the home, paying close attention to how the entire family feels about having a rabbit. Louie B. brought up the fact that when a family decides to adopt a child, they spend months-even years-making sure its the right decision for their family. So why don't more people do the research necessary before bringing a rabbit into the home? Education is the primary goal of Make Mine Chocolate! and with partners like Louie B., we will continue to have the opportunity to talk about this important issue at Easter, and throughout the year.

The "Make Mine Chocolate!" campaign was featured on NBC4 Midday today. Heather Dean had the opportunity to speak with NBC4 Anchor Anietra Hamper about the importance of educating the public about the responsibilities that come with having a rabbit, and that rabbits aren't necessarily good pets for children. Anietra really focused on the fact that rabbits make fantastic pets, but they should not be an impulse purchase at Easter. Heather talked about the fact that rabbits have just as many needs as cats and dogs, and can live 10 years or longer. Heather also made sure to mention that viewers can log on to www.makeminechocolate.org to decide whether a pet rabbit is right for them. The producers even aired a graphic with the information from our campaign flyer to emphasize things that should be considered before bringing a rabbit into one's home.

Anietra was once a bunny parent herself so she certainly appreciated our dedication to helping spread the word that live rabbits do not make good Easter gifts for children. Make Mine Chocolate! Place a chocolate rabbit or a stuffed toy in the Easter basket this year.

We certainly appreciate NBC4's continued support of the "Make Mine Chocolate!" campaign. Their support allows us to spread the MMC message to viewers all over Central Ohio.

Patrice, a supporter in the Midwest, says a Walgreen's by her house ("steady yourself-- this is gross") was selling rabbit feet dyed green for St. Patrick's Day as a "good luck charm". Patrice, who loves to watch the rabbits in her yard, and who is also Irish, was TOTALLY grossed out by this.

So she complained.

Walgreen's corporate ("the big office") got back to her within one day after she emailed them. The manager of her local store also sent her an email saying he had never thought about it, he had even gone to the HSUS.org website as she suggested, and he took the feet off the shelf and will not reorder in the future.

So the lesson is... complaining still works.

Patrice adds:

I would like for people to know how they can do this too! The reason I sent this to the attention of MMC was to encourage people to realize how a person can get results about animal cruelty, and oudated practices.

It is SO easy to do this with the websites. Not like years ago when one had to go to the library to look up a company's address, and then call to get the name of someone to contact, and then write a letter...and then to wait to see if you got a response.

I was polite, stated my case, asked them why they were selling such an item, told them about the HSUS.org website (not everyone is aware of animal issues), and wrote that if I didn't get results--my business walks...and it would have.

I also sent the manager a thanks email.

Good job, Patrice - Thanks for speaking up for the rabbits!

Heather Dean was proud to represent "Make Mine Chocolate!" today on the Louie B. Free Radio show this afternoon. It is exciting to speak to someone who is so passionate-and feisty-about the welfare of rabbits.

On the show, Heather discussed the importance of educating the public about what is involved with caring for a rabbit, especially this time of year with pictures of rabbits placed all over Easter cards and candy. Heather emphasized that a chocolate bunny makes a more sensible Easter gift for children.

During a commercial break, Louie B. apologized for getting so worked up about the issue of "Easter dumping." He really does speak from the heart about this issue, being the caretaker of 6 rescued rabbits himself.

We are very fortunate to have partners like Louie B. who dedicate their time to spread the message that rabbits are not disposable pets. He has generously offered to feature "Make Mine Chocolate!" again next week on his radio show so stay tuned!
